Flue-cured
We have three recognized varieties in the flue-cured type group : Hevesi 9, Hevesi 17 and Hevesi 19.
Before state recognition of new variety, the variety candidates are entered into a large scale field trials after breeding trials. The decision about the variety recognition is made on the basis of their (grower and industrial) performance in the field trials. At present Vj 23, Vj 24 and Vj 25 flue-cured variety candidates are included in field trials. The variety candidates have the same diesaese resistance as our currently recognized flue-cured varieties have, beside good yield potential, quality and curing characteristic.
HEVESI 9
This is a F1 hybrid with 16-18 harvestable leaves and medium plant height. It has an average growth rate both in the seedbed and in the field. It matures early. It has high resistance to potato virus Y, and medium resistance to black root rot and to brown spot. The yield potential, under average field conditions, is high (2300-2400 kg/ha). The signs of maturity are easy to recognize in the field, and the colouration is favourable in the barn. Cured leaves have good tissue quality, orange colour and good smoking quality.
HEVESI 17
This is a F1 hybrid with 20-22 harvestable leaves and medium plant height. It has an average growth rate both in the seedbed and in the field. This variety has higher resistance to potato virus Y than Hevesi 9. The resistance to black root rot and blue-mold is similar to Hevesi 9. Yield potential is high (2400-2500 kg/ha). The signs of maturity are easy to recognize, but only leaves harvested ripe will show favourable colour in the barn. Cured leaves have good texture, orange colour and good smoking quality.
HEVESI 19
This is a F1 hybrid with medium plant height. The appearance of this variety is very similar to Hevesi 9. The number of harvestable leaves is 18-20. It has an average growth rate both in the seedbed and in the field. It flowers and matures early. The level of resistance to potato virus Y is higher than Hevesi 9. Yield potential (2400-2600 kg/ha) and yield stability is high. The signs of maturity are easy to recognize in the field, and the coloration during the curing process is favourable. Cured leaves have good texture, orange colour and good smoking quality. It needs similar production conditions than Hevesi 9.
